This Roman Arena Shield has a core of Poplar wood which is overlaid in tight linen before it was painted. The back of the shield is reinforced with wooden bands and the shield is held with a horizontal center grip of wood. The shield boss is brass, as is the protective, riveted brass banding which lines the edge of the shield. This Roman Arena shield is smaller than the standard version and thus weighs less than the standard, full-size rectangular Scutum style shield. It is a good size representation of the smaller shields that may have been used by some gladiators. Please Note: The shield ships with the shield boss unmounted, so some assembly is required. Mounting hardware is included. Hue of shield colors can vary. It is common for this item to have patination on the brass shield rim and shield boss – it can be cleaned to a bright sheen with polishing paste and scuff pads.
