Two of these solenoid valves in the camshaft adjustment system control the oil pressure used to actuate the cam phasers on the intake or exhaust camshaft gears. The valve hydraulically switches between advance, retard, and lock positions, allowing the variator (cam phaser) to adjust the camshaft relative to the crankshaft.
