This Roman Scutum is crafted from poplar wood which is overlaid in linen and painted for a finish. The shield boss is brass and the shield is edged in banding of riveted brass. The reverse of the shield is reinforced with wooden strips and its center horizontal grip is rounded wood. This scutum is smaller than the standard Roman scutum, it is therefore well-suited for smaller legionaries, or for costume or plays. Being smaller it is also notably lighter and thus better suited for these purposes than the large, standard Scutum shield. Please Note: The shield ships with the shield boss unmounted, so some assembly is required. Mounting hardware is included. Hue of shield colors can vary. It is common for this item to have patination on the brass shield rim and shield boss – it can be cleaned to a bright sheen with polishing paste and scuff pads.
